As a fan of coming-of-age stories and historical fiction, I found this novel very readable with some excellent dialogue and funny lines. Most of the story takes place in a Catholic high school seminary in the late 1970s, where the students are studying to become priests, not the most usual setting for a work of fiction. The book gives us a behind the curtain look into that unique world, coupled with an underlying mystery and surprising secrets that keep the story moving forward.
I also found the main characters believable, likable, idealistic and tinged with an appealing innocence, attractive kids who happened to attend a strict parochial school. Finally, I felt my eyes stinging and filled with tears several times, and agree that the ending was moving and powerful, as mentioned on the back cover by another reviewer.
